As you know, we started our ‘Food for Scotland’ Project in 2018 with the main goal to provide hot, nutritious, and plant-based food to needy people. We believe that having access to nutritious food is not only a basic right of everyone but a guarantee of a great quality of life and humanistic development. With that in mind, during the current pandemic, we have increased our efforts distributing over 15,000 plates of hot meals in Glasgow and South Lanarkshire area.
In response to South Lanarkshire moving to Tier 4 restriction, we have launched a new initiative to help the members of our local communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by delivering hot, nutritious, plant-based meals directly to their doorstep. This Service is currently available in the Lanark, Larkhall, Lesmahagow, Kirkmuirhill, Auchenheath, Blackwood, Rigside, Douglas Water, Douglas and Coalburn areas for, elderly, vulnerable, self-isolating, low-income families or individuals, frontline workers and anyone else in difficulty.
After seeing our appeal for funds towards supporting this initiative, ‘Million Dollar Vegan’, which has also diverted funds into food relief during the COVID-19 pandemic, kindly offered to sponsor 450 plant-based meals. So far, they have worked in about a dozen countries around the world, including supporting people who live in slums in India, in favelas in Brazil, the Maasai villages in Kenya, homeless and refugees in Paris, homeless veterans in LA, United States, and others.
Like us, ‘Million Dollar Vegan’ sees food relief as an important short-term solution, but they also want to make a wider point to the rest of the world that eating plant-based food is good for our health, for the planet, animals, sustainability, food equity, global health and the future for us all.
